We live in such a rich area of Native American history.
Some of the 4th grade standards for Social Studies includes learning about tribes. We learned about some of our tribes from the different regions of California. Our next step was a project. The class was divided into tribes. Those students who were a member of a tribe, had first choice to work on that tribe's poster.
Once in their groups, each tribe was given a list of topics to research.
They had 3 different texts, plus a folder of many articles about their tribes.
Their first job was to take notes on their topics.
Once this was complete, they turned their notes into paragraphs. Drawing and coloring an illustration for each topic was next on the list.
Last but not least, was putting these altogether on their poster...
and making their letters.
Now it was time to practice presenting their posters to the class...
In these photos, the students are in front of their posters.
Some students still need to do their presentations...as we have had a lot of absences...extended absences. Tenoch, in the Yurok tribe, had his grandmother teach him how to say some things in the Yurok language. Tenoch then taught his group how to say them...and then they spoke some Yurok as part of their presentation. Gene, telling us about the mourning ceremony, brought a lot of emotion to the presentation as our heart goes out to one of our classmates and friend who recently lost his mother. The elements of the mourning ceremony Gene described were still fresh in many of our hearts.
I'll be adding to this post, as I realized I'm missing one poster!
