Rian

 Meet Rian!

Rian started by telling us she had a few pictures to show us.  She had one of her 'old dog' named Murray.  She told us he died, but she brought the picture because he was her very first dog.

Rian and her sister are having a tree fort built.  She showed us the construction so far...it's framed...and it looks amazing!  One of our Room 5ers said, "It looks like a HOUSE!"

Next we saw a picture of her sister, Cameron.  She's 8 years old and in Mrs. H's class.  Her shirt, in the pictures says, "Attitude is Everything."  Rian said, "Oh she has a big attitude...she's hilarious!"
This pic is of Rian and her Great-grandma.  She lives in Virginia but had flown up here from Arizona.

She had a photo of her grandpa who she calls "PopPop."
This bookmark is in Rian's bag because she loves to read.  She also told us she loves to go to school.

A Smurf was in her bag because it was one of her favorite movies she saw this summer.  There was a little dog that you wind up to do tricks.  She sat down on the floor and demonstrated for us.  She also told us the little dog remiinds her of her dog in Arizona.  His name is Sammy.

Rian had an empty container of lemonade.  She told us she lives near the golf course and she sells the lemonade to the golf course.  Along with this, she had a golf ball.  In addition, Rian told us she likes to golf.  I asked if she was good... "No," she answered.  At that answer, I told her we were two peas in a pod!
Rian showed us her goggles and told us she loves to swim.  She said because of this, her grandma calls her "Little Fishy.."

Little soda candies were also in her bag.  They're in there both for the fact that she likes sodas and also because they're her favorite candy!  When Room 5 started questioning her about the candy, she told us she bought it at the candy store near the bay.

Rian also likes to make bracelets.  She brought one she made for her mom to show us.
This Giant's lanyard is one she wears when she's home.  Plus, she loves the Giants!!  The lanyard, she told us later, is actually one of her mom's work lanyards!
After Rian showed us the Bubble Tape, (because she likes to chew bubble gum), she showed us her "Angry Bird."  She said it will split into 3....
Here is a photo of Rian with her Dad and sister.  You can tell they like baseball!

Rian also had a digital video camera.  She told us she likes to take videos...the download them on the internet.  Rian loves to go on the internet!
When Rian put on her glasses, she told us she likes to dress up and wear weird scarves.  (I love your glasses, Rian!)

She also showed us some bottle caps that she's collected.  She also likes to put them on necklaces.

Rian had some little heelys from her American Girl Doll. She likes the American Girl Dolls, but she also likes to skate on her heelys.

She brought a chocolate chip cookie (and gave a bite of it to her favorite fourth grade teacher!) and told us she likes to bake!  She made these yesterday, but she can't make any more because she spilt all the brown sugar!

A blue crayon was in her bag because she likes to draw...and blue is her favorite color.

She likes to play basketball, and brought a little mini-basketball to illustrate this.  There was also a mini baseball since she also likes baseball and softball.
Wow!  I took over 3 pages of notes on Rian's sharing!  I usually take one page or maybe 1 1/2 pages...but Rian had so much to share...and it was all in her bag!  We loved hearing about Rian and getting to know a little more about her!

How about this?

How about this?  Nathaniel and Andie posed with me for a boot picture on Friday!

We won't comment on Andie's shirt!  (just kidding...it's a great shirt!)

Alex

 Meet Alex!

He started his presentation by telling us, "I couldn't find any science stuff that would fit in this bag!"
He told us all his science books are much larger than THIS bag!
Related to science, Alex brought a survival gear kit.  He told us many of the items in this kit...but also let us know it also comes with lots of things he didn't bring...like the matches.  He said he knew they couldn't come to school so he left them at home.
Alex brought 4 Hot Wheels.  He told us one of them has a triceratops on it.  I asked him if he liked to play with them...and he said, "Some.."

He also brought a 'Bay Blade'.  I had to get them to spell this because I had never heard of this...they were trying to explain it to me.  Apparently, this particular one is called 'The Phoenix.'

The last thing Alex shared was a shell 'my mom let me use.'  He told us he didn't know where it came from and "that's all I know about the shell!"

It was great listening to Alex and learning more about him.

William

Meet William!

William first pulled a pair of motorcycle gloves out of his bag.  He told us his dad got him a mini-suzuki motorcycle!

He also had some 'funny cards'...telling us he really likes them.  He brought a couple to share with us.

He really likes crystals...and brought a white quartz crystal to show us.

William also likes to 'make stuff' out of metal and wood...with his grandpa.  They've made a sword... and an ax.  We could tell how he enjoys being with his grandpa!
William brought some photographs to share.  He had one of his dog, BC.  He had one of him with his cat on his lap, telling us "I looked really weird in this picture," which none of us agreed with!  His cat's name was Hobo.  Sadly, Hobo died on the same day as his dog.

In this picture above, William is in the 3rd grade...with his legos.  He told us he LOVES legos...and some of his buddies told us that was definitely true!
"THIS is the cool thing!" William told us as he began to open this box.

Inside were several lego creations.  One was Julian's gun they had made at William's house.  He also had, in the box, Anthony's guy who had a sword (a lego 'guy'), and also Aiden's lego guy.  Aiden actually goes to our other elementary school.  There was quite a lot of discussion about legos...and how much William loves playing with them.

He also shared a rock he got from a rock show he attended with his grandpa...and a turtle from Arizona where his mom went with a friend from Australia...and in this picture, he shared a glass Easter egg that he got for Easter.

As William was finishing his bag, Julian reminded us that William LOVES legos!

It's so much fun to learn more about William!

Cole

 Meet Cole!

As Cole began to share his bag, he told us, "I just have pictures."

He started with a picture when his family went to our friend, Jerry's, house at New Year's.
This is his sister...or one of his sisters.  He said she's already in college!

He also showed us a picture of his mom and dad...
 and his Grandma!

He had a picture of himself with his sister... He said she was older than him, 18 years old, and she's in Colorado.  This is a different sister from the one that's already in college.
This is Cole's Grandma and Pop.  Pop was in the army and drove a tank.  He retired and not in the army anymore...he's 71 years old.  He told us that Pop also has a lot of tricks.  Cole asked us if we wanted to see one of Pop's tricks.  Of course, every Room 5er DID want to see the trick.  Cole tried to demonstrate how Pop uses a rope and pretends he's putting it around your neck, then he pulls the rope and it comes right off!  He also told us Grandma was a nurse.

We could tell Cole loves his grandparents!  It was fun listening and learning about Cole!

Ethan F.

 Meet Ethan F.!

Why Ethan F?  We have 2 Ethans...so we have Ethan F and Ethan L.  We also have a Julian, Jullian, and Jillian!

Ethan started by sharing his remote-control car.  He told us it was a gift from his mom for Christmas.  I can't remember why...but he said it didn't go very fast now.
He also brought a bouncy-ball.  Ethan collects them and has a lot of them.  He likes to get them from a local Mexican food restaurant!  (remember....no specific names!)
This is a harmonica!  Ethan told us he loves to play music.  He's not sure where his mom got it.  I asked him if he wanted to play it for us, but he didn't.  He also plays the piano, and used to take piano lessons.

He also shared a rock that he found at the beach.  He has a 'whole bunch' of them at his house.
Last, but not least, Ethan brought his Nintendo DSI - 'a big one' a DSI XL!

I know I sure learned a lot about Ethan F!

Anthony

 Meet Anthony!

He started by showing us this belt...this belt that HE MADE!  He told us he made it in Boy Scouts, and that it was leather "cattle leather".
Anthony showed us this photo of his "grandpa's old embarrassing truck."  Well, when he said that, Room 5 had lots of comments and questions about the truck.  Most Room 5ers thought the truck was cool!

He also showed us a photograph of a logging truck.  He told us his grandpa logs.
Anthony also brought some "Fool's Gold"... Room 5 was curious why it was called by that name.  He also brought some crystal.
This is a baseball from our local semi-professional team.  Anthony showed us how they all signed it.
Legos are a favorites.

Nathaniel

 Meet Nathaniel!

You may notice in this first picture...Nathaniel is wearing cowboy boots!  YeeHaw!!!
Nathaniel brought a lot of photographs.  The first one is a picture of his dog.  It's his uncle's photo and the dog is hard to see, so Nathaniel decided to walk around so everyone could see it better.  Our audience started getting a bit restless....

so the rest of the photos, Nathaniel just held them up and told us about them.  He had a picture of his Uncle Steve and a friend.  He had another one "when we had a FEAST!"  He also brought a picture of his Uncle Les...actually two of Uncle Les.  In one of them, Uncle Les was cooking and he was wearing a green cap.  Nathaniel said Uncle Les ALWAYS wears a green cap!  He also showed us a picture of his backyard when it was all grass...before they had cement.
This is a statue of a horse.  It was his uncles (he didn't say if it was Uncle Les or Uncle Steve).
Oh these are great!  A little pair of brass cowboy boots... YeeHaw!
This is a white heart rock that one of his uncles found.

Nathaniel also brought another rock, a crystal, that he just found.  Actually, he found it with his uncles.

How fun it was to listen to Nathaniel share his bag!

Josslynn

 Meet Josslynn!
Josslynn started with showing us a sand dollar.  She said she likes to collect them and also other shells. She got this one at the beach with her mom.  Her mom has one, too.  She almost stepped on it but didn't.  She was looking at seals and almost stepped on it!
Josslynn also likes to paint magnets.  These two in the photo above, lost their magnet from the back...now they can't go on the refrigerator.
Rex, Josslynn's next door neighbor, likes to carve wood.  She likes to color on them.

She had a DP badge in her bag.  This came from her next door neighbor even though they go to our other elementary school!  Josslynn said her brother wanted the badge since he goes to our school, too!

Silly Bands were in her bag.  She gave some to friends who came over, but she still has some on her desk at home.

Josslynn also told us she likes to collect rocks.  The ones she brought are from a local rock beach (remember...no names!)  She also brought a mussell shell...

We learned a lot about Josslynn!

Kasey

 Meet Kasey!

She started sharing her bag by showing us her favorite puppy.  She said she can use it to trick people into putting their finger in its mouth.  She demonstrated in the photo above.  I asked Kasey if it hurt, but she just laughed!  (I think that meant, "no")
Kasey doesn't claim to be a golfer, but she told us she had this golf ball because she found it.  She actually was behind the high school with her brother and his girlfriend when he was there to play football.  They found the ball in the river.

She brought a car to share (not a real one, of course) and told us it has metal on it.  You can put something else with metal on it and it'll stay!  I asked if it was like a magnet, and Kasey said yes.

She brought a second stuffed dog that helped her to love to read.  She showed us how the dog says, "Do you like me?" and also it says something about having your 'nose in a good book.'
This is Kasey's DS.  She told us she got it for her 4th birthday.  She plays lots of games and sometimes when her cousin is over, she lets them color.
Lastly, this picture is Kasey when she was 4 years old playing soccer.  She doesn't play soccer anymore, but she played until she was about 7 or 8 years old.  She still LOVES the game, but her mom made her quit because she tried out for wrestling!  We loved hearing all about Kasey!

Serenity

 Meet Serenity!

Serenity is a Girl Scout.  She brought this 101 Badge to tell us about being a Girl Scout and to let us know it stood for the 101st birthday of Girl Scouts.

She told us about her dad and uncle...and how they like to race.  She brought some photos to share with us.  I asked her where they raced, but she wasn't sure...she's actually never seen them race!
This is another Girl Scout Badge...it's a cookie selling badge!  It also tells what troop you're in, but actually, Serenity told us, she's a Brownie, not a Girl Scout - yet!
Serenity showed us another one of her badges...this one is for horse riding!

She also likes to knit!  She brought a project she's started for her mom.

Serenity brought a key ring from Paris, France, given to her by her grandma!  She also brought 2 bracelets...also from Paris...also from Grandma!
Serenity told us she likes to train dogs!  This little pink dog is something she lets dogs play with when it's time for them to nap.  She said she likes to get the dogs worn out!

Last but not least, Serenity collects rocks!  She likes to paint on some of them and make them look like lady bugs!

It was fun to learn a little more about Serenity!

Kyler

 Meet Kyler!

In Room 5, each day a couple of students will be 'sharing their bag'... this means they will be telling us about themselves by the items they put in their bag.  Everything has to fit in the bag...nothing larger. Kyler was the first Room 5er to share.

He started by showing us a foam football.  Kyler loves football...and the football he brought WAS all foam, but some of it came off so he and a friend put tape all around it.  He told us now it looked like a pink flame!
Kyler also loves to read.  He brought in one of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books, which is one of his favorites!

He also loves baseball.  This year, the team didn't get trophies because so many parents couldn't afford them.  Instead, each kid on the team got a baseball with their name on it!  How perfect is that?
He also brought in a 'bouncy ball'.  He and one of his friends like to have 'bouncy ball wars'!

A lego was also in Kyler's bag.  He told us he likes to play legos.  He showed us two cars.  He did have a big huge truck, but it wouldn't fit in the bag.  He told us the truck was ''pretty neat" because it has a coffee pot in the front seat and a red coffee cup!
I (Mrs. J) got lost on the next discussion.  Kyler brought two Nintendo 3 DS games.  He said that's a DS that plays 3D, but it can also play 2D.  He said something about a DSI that has a camera???  I'm sorry for this confusion, Kyler.  Your teacher is a little LOT behind the times where video games are concerned.

Regardless, Room 5 loved hearing all about Kyler!

On a side note:  Kyler's MOM was a student of mine, too!

A New Year!

Room 5 is full swing for the 2011-2012 school year!  What a great group of young people we have!

This week is a bit different than what our average week will look like for most of the year.  For example, there is math homework coming home...with no time to work on it in class.  Today, we reviewed last nights homework.  I called students up to the overhead to solve the problem and 'think out loud' so we could all hear what they were thinking.  "Thinking out loud" is a common practice in room 5.

Our daily schedule and our routines will all be discussed at Back-to-School night on September 8th.
We've talked about how easy it can be to sit in your seat and KNOW how to solve problems...but how it can all of a sudden be very difficult if  you're up in front of the class.  In solving the subtraction problem in this photo, once one of the boys couldn't remember how to work the problem, he selected a 'helper'... and then when the 'helper' needed help, he called on another 'helper'...which is why we have the 3 boys in this photo!
Oh, I thought I'd just throw this awesome photo of my boots and 2 of my friends' boots in for your viewing pleasure!!!  :)

Here's to a great year!
