Thursday between field studies

 After Thursday's first field study, there was some time to play before lunch...

 

Some, like this group of Frisbee golfers (Tobias, Jason, Alex, Anthony, & Hunter), were enjoying the sunshine.  A lot of the group were inside the lodge...waiting for lunch!

There were 3 choices of sandwiches for lunch...plus fruit & chips... and lemonade (or water) to drink...

 After lunch, we had the Wapitis on Stumpy for a photo...

The Sea Lions, already having had their picture made on Stumpy, decided to pose in front of their cabin...

That was about all we had time for...it was time for our afternoon field study!

Stream field study

 

The Stream field study was another 'class' we had. 

 We hiked into the closest creek...

 We didn't take this trail, but this photographer liked the sign, with all the moss on it..

 Isn't it beautiful out in the forest?

 At the creek, we learned what numbers we would see if the creek was 'healthy.' 

 Talking about salmon, we got to see the stages of salmon...

 

We compared ourselves to the size of a full grown salmon...

 We took the temperature of the water... 

 

Aaron threw the thermometer in...but lost it as it went in...

 Not to worry!!!  John hollered at Hunter to run around and jump in the creek and save the thermometer...

 That was quick thinking on John's part...and quick action on Hunter's part...

 But thanks to Hunter, he saved the day...and the thermometer!!!

 We went back to testing the creek...

 and we found that it was healthy....and a good habitat for salmon...

We learned a lot about the stream...and what salmon need for their survival!

Early Thursday morning

 Thursday morning, we were up at 7 a.m.  It was pretty chilly outside, but Rian was ready for the cold.

 As was Hailee with her flashy ear muffs!

 The Food Network came to our outdoor school to do a show on camp food.  Cheryl and Rachel were busy getting breakfast prepared. 

 The Marbled Murrelets, which included Sawyer, were on duty to set up breakfast.

Cole and Cochise were right there to help.  You can see their fearless leader, Matthew, in the background, making sure the boys were not slacking!

 Some of our girls...ready for the cool weather and the field studies for the day!

 We had a little meeting before breakfast to review our expectations...

Then it was time for a breakfast of eggs, sausage, and pancakes!  Yum!

 After breakfast, one of the girls' cabins had clean up duty!

Jason brought his Camel Back so he'd always have his water handy!

 Everyone started gathering on the steps of the lodge to get instructions on the next field study...

 Karli wasn't being cooperative with her photo-taking teacher...so Mikayla gave me a little help...

It worked...sort of...we got a smile with her eyes closed! 

 Do these look like outdoor guys? 

 Ranger Laura was telling us about the next rotation of field studies...

 We listened intently...

 Nathaniel and Michael were ready to go...

We were thrilled with the blue skies...and no rain...and we were excited to start our full day at the outdoor school!
