Chrome Books

The fourth and fifth graders now have Chrome Books to use! We have 40 of them for the 6 classes to share.

We do all kinds of work on them.

Each student has their own blog. We write on those sometimes.

Lately, we've been practicing for the Smarter Balanced Test. This is the test that will be taking the place of the STAR test. This year is a practice for the test.

The new standards are called the Common Core standards. Because of the difference in the standards, the testing is also different...to reflect the standards.

We had the Chrome books today...and were running out of time to do much test practice...

so today, we played some math games on them!

This is Kayla...one of our HSU students who comes on Tuesday and Thursday mornings...and often will come other days. Kayla loves Room 5 and all the kids who live here!

Read Across America

February 28th was 'Read Across America' day. On this day, high school students come and read to classes. Fortunately for me, 3 former students came to our room! Above is Jacelyn!

Jaime and Allison also came and read a Dr. Seuss book. I think this either is or is close to Dr. Seuss's birthday...thus, Dr. Seuss books! Jaime and Allison took turns reading a page.

We definitely enjoyed having them come to our classroom and read! Plus, they had fun visiting their old 4th grade classroom an seeing their class photo up on the wall!

Cooperative Problem Solving

We do an activity called "Cooperative Problem Solving". In their table groups, each person is given a clue.

Each person, using their number tiles, makes a number that fits their clue.

They share it with their group...

Once everyone has shared their numbers with their table group...the clues are then put together to make THE one number that fits all 4 clues.

There's a lot of math language involved in the clues...and a lot of fun figuring it out!

1st Trimester Academic Excellence Awards

This is a bit late in being posted....I actually just saw this and realized I never had put it on the blog. It's getting close to the 2nd trimester awards being presented!

Academic Excellence is not easy. In every academic area, along with all the study habit areas, students must earn an "E" for Excellent in every single area.

Congratulations to Kate, Owen, Jaya, Kathryn, and Kai on this award for the first trimester!

Valentine Boxes

Room 5 had an at-home-assignment. They were to build a valentine box that was not more than 12" in any dimension (length/width/depth). It was to have an opening for the valentines that was at least 5' x 2". These were due today.

Each student was given a rubric with the requirements. They measured their valentine boxes and filled in whether or not they had completely followed the rules for building.
