Wednesday's "Friday groups"

Before we started our session of Friday groups (on Wednesday), we took a picture of the woodworking group and their finished hat/coat racks!  Aren't they gorgeoous?

Today, November 14th, was the first session of the 2nd rotation of groups.  Those who had been in the woodworking group went to the crocheting group.  Those who had been in the cooking group, went to the woodworking group...and those who ha been in the craft group became the cooking group.
Mr. C gave all his new members their planning sheet...they checked off their supplies...drew a diagram of what their finished product would look like....

Because this is the week before Thanksgiving, the cooking group started preparing for our Thanksgiving feast...
This included chopping up bread for stuffing...
I ran back to check on the woodworkers...Mr. C was the only adult...so I made adult #2 until Lura came.  He was showing the different types of saws..

The first task was to measure 1" off one end of the 2' board...then saw it off with a hand saw.  Ian was SO fast with his!  I had him hold up his cut off piece.

Back with the cooking group, Gretchen was instructing Jayden and Caleb on making part of the cranberry sauce....
Ashlynn, Cameron, and Sabrina were snapping green beans...
Isabella was chopping apples for the cranberry sauce...
Jason was working on the apples, too.
The crocheting group got off to a great start!  Hannah and Aliya were getting their initial string made...

Amara was listening carefully to April tell her how to turn and make her second row...

David and Micah were really enjoying learning this new craft!
Austin and Cole were really concentrating...wanting to get it exactly right...  I love seeing all of them crochet, but most of the boys are just so excited to learn!
Ms. C loves to crochet and it's been great to have her join the groups. (She has only recently been coming on Fridays since she had classes at the university on Fridays.)  She was showing Karli exactly how to hold the yarn and the hook....  Looks like Hannah knows exactly what to do...
Crutches aren't slowing down Caleb as a chef!  He and Jayden were listening to what they were going to do next...

Rachel was going over all the instructions with her newest group.

 HOLD IT!  Uhh....Isabella?
Jason and Ashlynn ... I think they were laughing at Isabella...
Do you see Debbie back there?  Debbie is a SAINT!  This is HER kitchen...she's been our school's chef for ... well, I don't know how long, but probably well over 20 years!  It's not every chef who will allow her kitchen to be invaded by a cooking group.  But Debbie...like I said, she's a saint.  Of course, Room 5 is a spectacular group of kids...and Rachel knows how to keep order...and keep a kitchen sanitary...
One of our foods to prepare was gravy.  Rachel was showing Jayden and Sabrina...and more that you can't see...how the gravy should be looking....
With the cooking group involved in gravy making, I went to check on the crocheters!  Aliya was trying to figure out where to put the next stitch.  I think she likes purple...purple flower in her hair, purple/pink scarf around her neck, purple on her shirt, and purple yarn to crochet with!

Fortunately, April's friend, Janice, came to help get our new group of crocheters started.  Janice used to work in a school and April thought she might be able to help explain how to start...and April was absolutely correct!  (Thank you, thank you, thank you, Janice!)
 Karli
 Micah
 David
April....thank you, April, for helping us in Room 5!
 Austin
 Cole

Back outside, Mr. C was showing Ian what his next step was...
 Jade continued to saw...
 so did Mikayla...
 and Elaine...

 Alex
 Cayden
Lura is great with the woodworking group.  She was helping Ian measure for his pegs...

Elaine showed off her board with the corners cut!
Felix came...and he helped Zoe hold her board steady...
Excellent, Ashlynn!  Washing hands is Rule #1 with the cooking group!
Look at that blur of Isabella's hand!  She and Cameron were in charge of stirring the gravy.
After showing us her board with the corners cut, Felix helped Elaine with how to drill the holes for her pegs.
Mikayla was ready to cut another corner, so she had to adjust the clamp...

Lura was helping Trenton...he's had his arm in a sling, so some of the woodworking was a little more difficult for him...
and then there is Dorothy...we all love Dorothy...and Dorothy loves all of us!  She also loves to make pies...berry pies, apple pies...just pies!  She volunteered to make an apple pie for our Friday feast...
As we were wrapping things up for the day's groups, Ashlynn's shirt predicted what Friday's feast would do...

Fill you up!
