Oh boy! This week we'll be learning LONG DIVISION! Some of those who live in Room 8 have already learned this, but many haven't.
In the beginning, I have the students put "D, M, S, a check mark, BD" down the side of their paper. I tell them this is their 'road map' to remind them what to do next. They stand for Divide, Multiply, Subtract, Check to make sure the remainder is less than the divisor, and Bring Down the next number. I have a way I always say the process when I'm teaching. Don't be surprised if when you're trying to help your child at home they say, "That's not how Mrs. Johnston taught me," and don't want to do it 'your way.' I've been teaching division for 15 years and it ALWAYS happens with many students...and not just with division.
I compare this to learning a new language. Your child will be trying to internalize this process they are hearing me teach. When anyone else deviates from that set language, they usually perceive it as being 'wrong'...even though what you're teaching them is the exact same thing. If this starts happening, you are MORE than welcome to come sit in class and listen, or call me and I'll go over it with you so you can hear. It would take too long to write out in this blog, plus you wouldn't hear the emphasis I place on certain words.
Tuesday morning will be GATE Testing. This will take up most of our morning. Most kids really enjoy the test. Mrs. Wheeler makes it a lot of fun, giving breaks and stretches as they're needed. We will still take our regular recess and have our snack as I read aloud to them. Then we'll just continue with the testing.
Wow...we're starting the 4th week of school...Time flies when you're having fun!
