What to work on...

In math, one of the concepts we're working on is the difference between the PLACE of a number and the VALUE of a number. This is confusing for some. You may want to ask your 4th grader about this to see how they're doing. For example, in the number 45,693 the 6 is in the hundreds place, but the value of the 6 is 600.

We've also started rounding. One way I'm teaching is to find the two possibilites a number can be rounded to. For example, if the number is 27,875 and it needs to be rounded to the thousands place, then the only two possibilities are 27,000 or 28,000. Then we look to the right of the digit - in this case it's the 8. The rule is, if the digit to the right is 5 or more, the digit in the place you're rounding to goes up one. If it's 4 or less, it stays the same.

In Social Studies, we have learned that the equator is a line of latitude. It is also called a parallel. It divides the earth into the northern and southern hemisphere. We've also learned about the Prime Meridian. It's also called the Greenwitch Meridian and it's a line of longitude. It divides the earth into the eastern and western hemispheres. We are reviewing the 7 continents and the 4 oceans - Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, and Arctic.

Can you believe we're already in the 3rd week of school? As we say in room 8, "Time flies when you're having fun!"
