Geography

Tanner working on his map

We've started the year with a study of geography. We have learned that the world is a sphere...that the equator divides the earth into the northern and southern hemisphere...and the Prime Meridian divides it into the eastern and western hemispheres.
Kamren

We learned that the equator is a line of latitude...as all the other lines that run horizontal are. These are also called parallels...because they are parallel to each other.
Owen

We learned that the Prime Meridian is a line of longitude...as are all the other lines that run vertical - from the north to the south pole. The Prime Meridian is also called the Greenwich Meridian...do you know why?
Octavia

We learned that the equator is 0 degrees latitude and the Prime Meridian is 0 degrees longitude. We also are just starting to learn how you can name any place on earth by its latitude and longitude.
Madison

We've also reviewed the names of the seven continents and where they are...along with the four main oceans - Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, and Arctic.
Jesse

Friday, we looked and labeled two different maps with all these geographic places. The two maps, while having the same information, looked different. On one, the Prime Meridian was not drawn in...20 degrees east and 20 degrees west were there...so Room 8 had to draw in 0 degrees.

Geography...that's what Michael Jordan majored in while he was in college. When asked why he majored in geography, he said he knew he would be going places, and he wanted to know where he was when he got there!
