How do you study spelling?

Tanner and Owen

For years, I would remind my class to 'study your spelling words' ... never thinking that some may not know HOW to study...

Now, on most Thursday mornings, we break up into pairs and study. We've talked about the different ways this can be done at home...both with another person and by yourself. In Room 8, each pair decides together how they want to study. Some will simply take turns saying a word, then listen to the other spell it. Some will say the word and the other write it down. Some go back and forth and some have each person do the entire list, then switch. I tell them they have a 'fourth grade choice' on how to study.

Thursday was our first time to do this...
Elijah and Brandon
Tamia and Kylie
Taryn and Octavia
Bryan and Art
Chloe and Maiya
Madison and Stephanie
Jade and Kiley
Alex T and Jesse
Emilee and Jennifer
Caleb and Russell
Meigan and Haley
Elijah and Brandon
Nathaniel and Ariel
Kamren and Kasey

Spelling for our week usually consists of SSCWC on Monday, a spelling paper on Tuesday, Spelling sentences/story on Wednesday, practicing on Thursday, and then our test on Friday. Our test is actually spelling dictation...where I use the words in sentences and Room 8 writes the entire sentence. Everything is graded....all spelling and punctuation.
