The sewing group got to pick out their materials and start cutting them out.
The cooking group started on their cookies...
The woodworking group was listening to Mr. C talk about sandpaper grit and number....and drawing their diagram of the future hat rack!
Nico was ready to work!
Ok, let me think...3 teaspoons is equivalent to 1 Tablespoon...
Tammy was explaining how you pack brown sugar in the measuring cup to get the right amount. That's different than white sugar. Cherish was wanting to be the one to add the vanilla.
YUM! The beginnings of the pumpkin chocolate chip cookies....
Becky was showing Lacie how to cut precisely on the lines. We need our squares to be ... square!Jair and Jayce are having fun in the sewing group...although they're not sewing...yet!
That looks perfect, Breanna!
For each coaster, you need 2 squares of 3 different materials and 4 squares of one material. Then you need 2 squares of the muslim, or backing material and 2 squares of the felt or batting.
Back to the cooking group... The cookies are coming along. Kai is ready to add...is it salt?
Jayden and Cody are learning how to read a recipe. We definitely don't want to leave any ingredient out...and we don't want to much of something like salt or baking soda. Now, too many chocolate chips might be OK!
Lucas...wonder what he's thinking?
Looks like Jair is about finished cutting out his green squares...
I love that blue material! Breanna was getting ready to put her template (pattern for the square) in the corner of the material. We don't want to waste any material if we can help it!
Makenzie is about ready to start sawing her wood. Looks like her diagram is drawn.
Elias...you're suppose to be looking at Mr. C.... Looks like John, Elias, and Owen have all picked out their board...
Back at the sewing group, Becky is showing someone, (I can't tell who) how to pin the layers together.
and how to trim the corners...
Evan, Jayce's little brother, is a trooper! He comes in every Friday with his mama, Jennifer, and you wouldn't even know he wasn't a regular Room 5er!
Aarin is ready to pin her layers together...
Lacie is cutting out the felt... That gives the coaster some thickness...and it will absorb moisture when a drink is set on it.
Mother and son at the sewing machine! (aka Jennifer and Jayce)
Oh boy! Athena and Kai are getting the cookies on the cookie sheet....
Jaya and Kathryn are patiently waiting for their turn to drop the cookies on the cookie sheet....
Evan is busy...
Kevin...what is he doing? Maybe helping scrape some of the dough off the spoon?
Back outside, Ryan is hard at work cutting an inch off the edge of the wood. The wood starts off at 24"...but it ends up at 23" after 1" is cut off.
Owen is getting his saw lined up with the line he drew after he measured one inch in from the edge.
That looks good, Makenzie! Keep on going!
You may not be able to tell that this is Kate. She's focused on her sawing...
John is about finished with this cut!
Mr. C is showing Owen how you can also hold the wood, besides having your foot on it, to help keep it steady.
Jim shows Veronica how to put a clamp on the wood to secure it to the stand... The 'stands' are actually buckets that have larger pieces of wood screwed into the bottom. That makes a great stool, or in this case, a stand to hold the hat rack as it's being made.
Elias... looks like he's ready to measure!
Pumpkin chocolate chip cookie dough...ready for the oven!
I LOVE having all these sewing machines lined up in the back of the room and students sewing on them! Of course, this wouldn't be possible without our parents!
Cherish and Cody are putting the Oatmeal chocolate chip cookie dough on the baking sheets...
Evan is sitting at his brother's desk...
Here is the cooking group - or part of them - in the kitchen with some cooling cookies! Debbie, who runs the kitchen - is THE BEST! She's so generous with letting us invade the kitchen on Friday's!
Oops...as I was walking through the gym from the kitchen to the wood group, I spotted Mr. Cr showing his class how to do the plank! Good form, Adam!
Veronica is using the two-hand method...
Kate has cut off the inch on the end and is now measuring the diagonals on each corner...
Owen has his board secure while he saws...
John...is using the one handed method...
Elias needed a bit of help with the clamp. Jim was right there to give him a hand!
Cherish and Bevin...eyeing those cookies!
Kevin was explaining how he was suppose to get more cookies than anyone else (just kidding!)
Elena was showing some finer points of sewing to Jayce... Elena, Nico's mom, is the one who rounded up all the sewing machines, except for one (mine).... Thank you again, Elena!!!
Oh my goodness! Lucas, those are beautiful! One pair of coasters complete!
The cooking group was starting to serve. We don't touch the food with our hands unless we have on gloves. The usual way is using the spatula.
Two recipes of cookies...two groups of servers! Cody and Jayden make a good team...
Looks like we have a team of 4 here. I think Kathryn and Jaya are the official servers...with Kai and Athena there for support :)
Evan has his napkin ready as he PATIENTLY waits for his cookies!
Everyone got 3! We had enough of the pumpkin for everyone to have two. Mr. C and Jim were excited to get their three!
The protocol for the serving of whatever has been made is this: First the students and adults in Room 5 are served. Next, the servers go to the kitchen and serve Debbie and Robbie, who so patiently endure the cooking group in their kitchen! After the kitchen, the servers go to the office and serve Dorothy, Mr. S., and Cheryl. If there's any left, they go to the 4th grade teachers...still some left? They go to the 3rd and 5th grade teachers.
I'll post the recipes a little later today! They were absolutely delicious!
