November 1st Friday Groups

 

Kevin and Kai with...the knives!

 Today was the 2nd session for our 2nd rotation of Friday groups!  The cooking group had a job to do...making empanadas!  There was a lot of dough to roll out and cut in circles... There were 2 different fillings.  Kevin and Kai are cutting potatoes for one of the fillings.

 Kathryn and Athena were busy cutting the dough into circles... An empanada is like a turnover...

 Cherish was excited to start rolling...Tammy and Ms. G were explaining how to do it!

 Over at the sewing group, Breanna was cutting material for her 2nd set of coasters..

 Jair finished his first set and it was time to iron them.  Ironing is something not many Room 5ers have ever done!

 Aya was trying to show David what to do next...

 Tim, our great Grandpa... aka Jair's grandpa... who is a great woodworker, is helping Elias mark his wood for where he'll drill holes for his pegs!

 John is still working on cutting his corners on the diagonal...

 Kate is double checking her cut before continuing... KATE!  Put those safety glasses on!!!

 Don't you think Makenzie looks like a woodworker?  The pink shoes, the little bun bopping up and down on her head as she was sawing!  I should have done a video!

Jim was coming over to double check on this woodworker!

 I just love this woodworking outfit!  The pink shoes... :)

 KATE, KATE, KATE!!!  Put those glasses on!

 Owen, that cut on your knee isn't from the saw, is it? 

 Mr. C is great at teaching all the finer points of working with wood!  Ryan is listening to every word!

 Is this Elias?  I can't tell....but Mr. C is helping him with the belt sander!

 You can see Jim (background) and Tim (foreground) helping Veronica and Ryan.  We could not do this without our parents & grandparents!  I am just so grateful for all our help!!!

 The cooking group was ready to start putting the pumpkin filling on some of the rounds of dough.  We have Ms. G here on Fridays now...so she is working with Tammy in the cooking group!

 Jayden was hard at work rolling and cutting the dough!

 Jaya was busy with the filling for the potato empanadas...

 For the potato filling, Kathryn was chopping cilantro...a lot of cilantro!  Kathryn, you're using a knife...a big knife!  I would feel a little lot better if you'd look at what you're doing!!!!

 Athena...working on the rounds of dough.  See that scoop she has in her hand?  That's what I keep in the container with my flour.  It was my grandmother's.  I called her Mimi...which is what my grandkids call me!

 Wow!  Look at that focus on Ms. G's face!  She's putting some of the pumpkin filling down, then they're turned over and sealed!

 Evan had some pretty cool cars!

 Breanna finished cutting out her squares.  Her next step was folding them in half and ironing....

 Great job, Lacie!!!  She has one of her coasters completed!

Oh my gosh! Lucas finished all 4 of his...and this is only the 2nd session!

 Aya helped David keep his template (pattern) steady while he traced around it.

 After Lucas showed us his 4 completed coasters, he decided to iron them.  They look so good!!!

 Evan's cars are crashing!  Oh no!

 I think Jair is waiting for a sewing machine...

 Oops!  I think the sewing machine came unthreaded!  Jennifer was concentrating on getting the thread through the tiny eye of the needle!

 Elena, who rounded up almost all the machines, is helping Jair get started sewing around the edges!

Kathryn...among the others in the cooking group...also had to clean up the dishes.  Debby has THE best nozzle to wash the dishes with...and THE best dishwasher!

 Oh, there is more of the cooking group...coming to help Kathryn!

 Now this is Debby...Debby who does NOT like me to take her picture.  You can't hear her, but she was saying, "Judy, don't!"  Um?  Judy did!

 Debby is the absolute best!  She's so generous with the kitchen...so accommodating to all the chefs and parents of Room 5!

 After the cooking group serves the students and parents in Room 5, Debby is the next person to serve!

Tammy, Dusty, and Kevin...the parents of the cooking group! 

 Ms. G was bringing back the clean rolling pins...back to Room 5!  We're so glad she's with us full time now!

 Kai and Jayden...what are you doing?  Just drinking some water...waiting for the empanadas to be done? 

 Oh...YUM!!!

 While the empanadas were cooling, Mr. C was wrapping up the sanding with Owen.  It looks like he's already drilled the holes for his pegs!

 OWEN!!!  Where are YOUR safety goggles????

 Ok, now John is finished with his sanding...and he's reading a BOOK with his safety goggles on!

 Jaya, Kai, and Kathryn were serving one of the empanada recipes... they were both DELICIOUS!!!

 Ms. G was giving a bit of assistance to Bevin and Cherish as they served the other recipe!

 Tammy had to take off a bit early...she let Owen know she was taking off. 

 

Jennifer was letting Evan know how great he had been during Friday groups! 

 I bet she told him how much she loved him!

 Meanwhile, the cooking group finished serving everyone.  Each Room 5er (and parent) got 2 empanadas...one pumpkin and one potato/green chili....

 After everyone had eaten, we voted...voted to see which recipe they most liked...

  The potato/green chili was the favorite...although many also chose the pumpkin!
