John is getting the dough for scones ready! Tammy is one of our great parents in the cooking group. Elias is watching and waiting for his turn....
Kai is cutting out material for his coasters...
Jaya is sewing around the edges of hers...
Becky, another of our great parents, is working on one of the machines. We have our share of broken needles, and the machine coming unthreaded....Cherish is hard at work next to Becky.
Out at the woodworking group, Mr. C is helping Jayce rout the edges of his hat rack...
Tim, our great grandpa, is showing Kenneth how to use the HUGE drill machine!
Back to the router with Mr. C and Jayce....
No, it's not Halloween YET....but here is Lucas, who finished his hat rack...so he's reading a book while everyone else finishes theirs!
Lacie is doing the same thing...
Aarin is showing me what she's done on her hat rack...
(This is a great example of using a hypen (-). Tim is a great (adjective) grandpa....as opposed to a 'great-grandpa' meaning someone's grandpa's dad)
In the craft group, once you finished your coasters, we started a project called "Kiss the Cook." There is a pattern for this on paper which is taped onto a piece on tin. Then using a nail and a hammer, you pound the nail into the holes outlining the design. Here, Nico and Fawn are working on it together.
Bevin is pounding away....
Back to the cooking group...you can see all three of our great parents: Tammy, Kevin,, and Dusty. Looks like the scone dough is being put on the cookie sheets....
Kathryn, those are looking great!
Once the scone dough is put on the cookie sheets, we cut them in wedges. You don't have to cut all the way through. When they're done, it makes it easier to separate them. Here is Ryan, Kevin, Veronica, Dusty, Kate, and John.
Kate is getting the last batch of dough ready...
Owen is doing the same thing...
Our male chefs: Owen, John, Elias, and Ryan...
In the sewing group, another great parent, Jennifer, is helping Athena with the dreaded 'seam-ripper'!
Enough seam ripping, Jennifer went out to help with the 'Kiss the Cook' project. Who is that in the pink sweatshirt? Kai is on the other side of Jennifer.
Looks like Jaya and Cody finished their coasters and are ready to start on "Kiss the Cook"....
As did Cody....
10:15 a.m. is the time to stop groups. Everyone helps clean up. Here is Jair carrying in some of the supplies from the woodworking group....
Mr. C and Tim are rounding up the supplies, too.
Aarin grabs one of the stools to bring back to Room 5....
Jayce is getting ready to haul in one of the buckets...
David...well, looks like he just has his book and paper....
Jim has some help from Veronica with sweeping up the sawdust... Mr. C is loading the tools...
OH YEAH! Dusty is cutting the scones into wedges for serving...
After recess, the cooking group serves. We always wash our hands, but even though we have clean hands, we serve the food with a spatula. Each student and parent was able to have a cheese scone...
and an orange-chocolate chip scone....
with some clotted-cream! YUM!!!
Our wonderful servers of scones with clotted cream!
And now for the recipes:
Chocolate Chip Orange Scones
2 cups all-purpose flour
1/3 cup granulated sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup unsalted butter, chilled
2 large eggs
1/4 cup orange juice
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon grated orange peel
3/4 cup semisweet chocolate chips
1 egg white mixed with 1/2 teaspoon water (for glaze)
Preheat oven to 425 degrees.
In a large bowl, stir together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
Cut the butter into the drive ingredients until it looks like coarse crumbs.
In a small bowl, mix together the eggs, orange juice, vanilla, and orange peel. Add this to the flour mixture and stir to combine. The dough will be sticky.
With lightly floured hands, knead in the chocolate chips.
With floured hands, pat the dough into an 8 inch diameter circle in the center of a cookie sheet that has parchment paper on it or has been greased. Brush the top with the egg white mixture. With a serrated knife, cut the dough into 8 wedges.
Bake for 20-25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
Cool for 10 minutes before cutting.
