He was a teacher here for over 30 years....I think he said he taught 33 years! The bulk of his teaching was 5th grade, which he loved. When he found out at the end of last year that I was going to teach a combo, his first response was, "Do you want to do Friday Groups?" I think I just stared at him...not knowing what to say, and then he added, "I'll do the wood working group!" How could I refuse?
On October 26th, we had our first session of Friday groups. Mr. C started the woodworking group by having them put on safety goggles, an apron, and answering questions about sandpaper.
Jon, Aliya's dad, volunteered to help with the woodworking group! Each of the students were also given a clipboard with a diagram sheet, where they had to draw a diagram of the piece they're making.
The 'craft group' is run by Lauri (Sabrina's mom) and April (Sawyer's mom). This group was introduced to crocheting!
Figuring out how to hold the yarn, keeping it taut, AND holding the hook, and maneuvering it all....well, it's not easy!
We definitely had some intense concentration going on!
Gretchen was helping with this group....
as was Lura!
Jayden told me he had a 'talent' for crocheting!
Caleb was trying to figure out what in the world was going on with his hook and yarn!
They were making pumpkin-chocolate chip cookies...
Back to the woodworking group...they first had to measure one inch off one side...and then with a handsaw, saw it off!
It was a proud moment when it came off! (We had some tired arms...and hands...but we weren't finished yet!)
Mr. C explained how to measure and cut the corners...
Back to the cooking group: Mikayla and Zoe were excited that the cookies were in the oven... a delicious smell was permeating the halls of our school... our stomachs were starting to growl...
Rachel took the job of removing them from the oven...we didn't want any burned hands from Room 5.
Pointing to the finished product was part of the cooking group....
Cayden was helping with the dishwashing...
Here's the woodworking group from a distance....
Back to the craft group: We were still having a time getting everyone started on their first string...
except Jayden...who had already turned a couple of times and was on his 3rd row, I think...
Looks like Sawyer has the hang of it...
Back to woodworking, David is making sure he's marked the corner correctly...
Back to cooking... this is THE cooking group! (with one pan of their delicious cookies!)
A little math had to happen with the cooking group, to figure out how many people the cookies had to feed. How many would each person get?
While all this math was going on, Cameron was still intent on crocheting...
and the woodworking group was cutting their corners...
and the craft group was wrapping up their time crocheting...
We ended with some delicious cookies...
and excitement for our next session, which won't be until November 2.
A HUGE thank you to all the parents helping...and of course, to Mr. C., who thought of the whole idea!
