Create a Number is an activity I do a lot on Fridays...sometimes other days, but mostly on Fridays. This one was creating a license number. One of the aspects of this that I love, is the math language and the thinking involved. For example, in this one, 'succession' and 'ascending order' were words that wasn't known by most of Room 5.
There were also 5 different possible answers.
The students worked in pairs to try and find the 5 answers...
They have to pay close attention to each clue...
Sometimes, it can be a bit frustrating when you're not "getting it"....
Often times, with the multiple answers, the students learn to look for patterns...
For example in this one, the clue said the letters in the number were the first 3 letters of Mr. Redding's last name, but NOT in that order.
Once they started with D, what were all the possibilities?
DRE and DER
Starting with E, what were all the possibilities?
ERD and EDR
Starting with R, what were all the possibilities?
RDE was the only choice because RED would be using the letters in the same order as his name.
The digits never changed since Mr. Redding knew the last digit was a 7...and since the numbers were in succession....and in ascending order, there was only one possible way for the digits to be.
So what were the five license plate numbers:
4RDE567
4DRE567
4DER567
4EDR567
4ERD567
It was a brain workout for Room 5!
